  2. movie – 바보

    March 3, 2008 by admin

so, the school holidays for the elementary / high school kids have ended – which translates to a battle every morning on the bus with the school kids. thank god they all get off after a few stops.

have been busy the past weekend – i met up with another singaporean (whom i got to know randomly — long story, but the gist is that she contacted me through my blog) who will be here in korea for 1 month for lunch and on a whim we decided to catch a korean movie.

so there we were at the cinema, trying to look for a korean movie, and only one of them seemed to be rather watchable. we bought 2 tickets for 바보 (according to google, the english titles for this movie are “BA:BO”, “miracle for a giving fool”, “miracle of giving fool” and “miracle of a giving fool”), expecting it to be a light-hearted romantic comedy, which turned out to be anything but. it was not bad though, and a pretty easy movie to follow in terms of language.

as the title suggests, the main character (played by cha tae-hyun of my sassy girl) is intellectually-handicapped, and has a childhood love interest (played by ha ji-won) for whom he has been waiting for the past 10 years.

as the plot unfolded with hints that there would be some sort of a many-sided (i think it was 5-sided?) love story that has come to be pretty much synonymous with korean shows, the show unexpectedly concluded with a denouement that left me feeling empty (??), like something — i don’t know what though — was missing or lacking. then again it could be simply because i couldn’t anticipate the ending, which may not be a bad thing really.

it’s not exactly your typical korean love story — there was the romance element, but the theme wasn’t fully developed or explored. it was more about the main character’s life, and his relationships with the people around him.

it was heart-rending, sweet, funny and touching all at the same time. nice. :)

so anyway, i got tagged by ivy.

  3. movie – the devil’s game (더 게임)

    February 10, 2008 by admin

went to watch the devil’s game (official site (korean), movie page on hancinema.net (english)) with soo-jeong today.

basically the plot is about a young, struggling artist (played by shin ha-gyun (신하균)) switching bodies with a rich, dying old man (played by byeon hee-bong (변희봉)) after they made a bet. i thought that shin ha-gyun did a pretty good job in acting out the facial expressions and mannerisms of an old man. some laughs were provided in the form of ha-gyun’s uncle (played by son hyun-joo (손현주)) and the twist at the end of the story was rather unexpected.

the pace of the movie was just nice and didn’t feel draggy, with just enough drama at appropriate intervals, such that the 2 hours passed pretty quickly.

the last korean movie i watched in the cinemas was 식객 (le grand chef), and i couldn’t really follow the story during the palace scenes and when they were talking about the past — the words and grammar used were quite archaic and there was a fair bit of dialect used. however, i found this movie much easier to follow in terms of the pace of the dialogue as well as the grammar and vocabulary. also, one of the speech levels that i learnt last term (the 하게체) was used quite a lot by the old man (and the old man in the young man’s body), so it was a pretty fruitful “lesson” in a sense. i think i could follow about 80%~90% of the movie? it’d be a good movie to watch if you’re learning the korean language too. :)
